Mayday! Mayday! San Blas Islands!

Bip Bip est bien partie pour la Colombie, c'est à notre tour maintenant! 2 options s'offrent à nous: l'avion ou le bateau. Nous avons vite choisi soit quelques heures d'avion puis beaucoup de nuits d'hôtel soit une croisière de 5 jours sur un volier, tout compris (et à peine plus cher que l'avion), en passant par les îles paradisiaques de San Blas...

La première nuit de traversée n'a pas été si drôle avec un bon mal de mer... Mais le réveil sur les îles m'a fait tout oublier! La photo parfaite de carte postale... Un vrai paradis: micro îles plantées de palmiers et entourées d'eaux turquoises.

Nos journées ont été rythmées par le snorkeling, la pêche et la détente tout simplement... Nous regrettons notre feu appareil photo sous-marin qui nous a quitté au Nicaragua...

Les deux jours de pleine mer qui ont suivi ont été moins relaxant mais plus aventureux puisque nous nous sommes retrouvés en panne de batterie au milieu de nulle part avec comme unique horizon l'océan... Pas d'autre choix que de faire un appel radio: "maday maday!!!" Un énorme paquebot russe est venu à la rescousse et nous a offert une nouvelle batterie! Incroyable non?
Il s'en est suivi une course avec des dizaines de dauphins!

Bip Bip has left on her ‘maiden voyage’ all grown up and on her way to the other side, and now it is our turn.  There are two options to us – either we fly or we sail.  Either way it will cost us: hotel and taxi and flight and more hotel and food food food OR a 5 day ‘cruise’ all included with the added benefit of chilling in a bit of real paradise on the San Blas Islands.  Guess...

The first night of the cruise was a bit of a roller-coaster with the lack of wind but the roiling ocean.  Fanny was the first to blow her gaskets overboard!  It was hard to sleep in the hot steamy and cosy conditions but morning broke with us anchored IN the picture postcard. 

Micro palmed islands in a blue sea, our day passed snorkeling, fishing and beaching.  We missed our underwater camera that suddenly was no longer waterproof in Nicaragua.  Bummer.

We wrapped up our tour with a two-day motor out of sight of land was a nicer experience (now we were real sailors!) but we had a battery/electricity problem resulting in the motor not being able to restart; OH OH.  With nothing but water on the horizon we issued  a Mayday and along came a cargo  ship and voila – new battery.  Off we go just in time to be escorted by the dolphins.  Wonder if they came because of the mayday??

Panam'

Ne vous méprenez pas, nous ne sommes pas à Paris mais bien au Panama, là bas derrière l'eau (comme disait mon collègue burkinabais quand il parlait de la localisation de la France par rapport au Burkina).
Bref, voilà notre dernier pays sur la liste de l'Amérique Centrale et à nous l'Amérique du Sud!!!!!

Here we are in the last country in Central America staring hang-dog southward like some festering jungle-rotted pirate dreaming of the New World searching for the golden galley.  Panam...a song title by Edith Piaff...a slang term now for Paris works nicely for our time here in PANAMA.  Its a joke you would only get if you were French. Sorry. From here we are south to South America.  youpi

Nous n'avons malheureusement pas vu grand chose du Panama mais passé plus de temps dans les garages, quincailleries et à se charger des formalités pour l'acheminement de Bip Bip en bateau vers la Colombie. Dois-je rappeler qu'il y a une interruption de 87 km de route (le Darien gap) au milieu de la jungle entre le Panama et la Colombie?

We haven't done our usual tour around the country - well, in a tourist visiting sense.  We DID in fact get to visit around a few more garages and a more than a few parts stores.  Our time here was and is dedicated  to the challenge that is getting Bippers across to the 'other' side of the Darien gap.  And we booked passage on a 'backpacker' boat called One World to carry us across from Panama through the San Blas islands to Cartagena.

Nous avons cependant vu la plage de Las Lajas avec son ciel rose au moment du coucher du soleil, la petite ville de Boquete et ses jardins un peu fous (qui m'inspirent pour notre futur jardin si on en a un un jour...). J'adore l'idée du toilette pot-de-fleur...

We did get to visit the super duper beach at Las Lajas glowing in a golden sunset, the colonial and quaint mountain ville of Boquette (nice sleep that night in the fresh air and replete with fine pizza).  Fanny got to poke about the crazy gardens outside of town...there was something about a toilet turned into flowerpot???

Par contre, beaucoup de plages sont bordées par des maisons grand luxe+++ où il est impossible d'y accéder avec la voiture. Ca c'est un peu dur pour nous qui sommes habitués à camper et dormir berçés par le bruit de l'océan... Trop dure la vie!

We struggled a couple of times trying to get access to the famous beaches to boondock as we love to do.  The castles and luxurious summer homes have effectively barricaded the access to the poor (us).  Life is too hard when you try to mask cheapness with 'free living'.

Com' D'ab', nous n'avons pas échappé au passage par la capitale Panama avec ses grands gratte-ciel et le vieux quartier de San Felipe. A vrai dire, je crois que c'est la capitale que j'ai préféré en Amérique Centrale. On a même pu profiter du parking gratuit, avec internet gratuit et douche chaude gratuite au yacht club de Balboa!!! Le pied!!!

And as usual, we have included Panama City in our tour of capital cities.  Skyscrapers are stunning to see after all this time and are a juxtaposition to the old quarter of San Felipe.  Fanny figures that it is the best looking capital in the zone.  I, however, appreciated the free parking, free internet and free HOT showers at the Balboa Yacht Club.  Did NOT appreciate the $4beer at TGI Friday's.

Ensuite, nous avons passé une bonne partie de notre temps occupés et préoccupés par l'acheminement de Bip Bip derrière l'eau! Son tout premier voyage tout seul... Pauvre Chrissy, il a regardé Bip Bip disparaitre derrière le grillage conduit par un parfait inconnu, la larme à l'oeil.
Beaucoup d'attente et d'imprévu. Le bon moment de créer un groupe de tricot et de faire un remake des parapluies de Cherboug pendant que les mecs s'occupent de la paperasse!
Ca c'est fait, nous sommes dorénavant  sans domicile mais bien fixés dans un endroit, la ville de Portobelo, depuis une petite semaine.

We have been occupied and preoccupied with the sending of Bip Bip across.  Remember this is her FIRST voyage all alone and we are concerned parents watching Bippers turn the corner of a stack of shipping containers with some stranger at the helm was akin to sending your baby to .... say Columbia... all by herself.  Fanny found herself a knitting group in the port while I walked the port officials (and the lackadaisical drug sniffing dog - hey is he alive or just coke-high?) around Bippers.  We are officially homeless but we assuage our concerns by alleging that we are taking a vacation from our vacation. Yea right whatever.  We are STUCK in Portobello waiting for our ship to come in.  It IS a cast of characters here in a day-by-day real reality show.  I am happily busy with drinking beer and watching the parade.

Ici, Chris a parlé, parle et va encore et encore parler à tous les propriétaires de voiliers du coin et résultat des courses il en veut un!!!! Ce sera peut-être notre prochaine aventure! Qui sait?

Fanny is upset and is picking on me.  I have 're' discovered my dream to sail (strangely enough I fit nicely into this ragtag goofy group of lost bedraggled sun-faded beer-fuzzy cruisers living a dream slowly dying).  Of course I want a boat.  Yet one more distraction in a life full of adventures yet to unfold.  SHE tells me I gotta finish this one first....  THEN maybe.  I continue, of course, to secretly search the internet for Bipper's replacement 'Coyote'.

Delphinagua

Bip Bip hospitalisé en Honduras, j'ai dû prendre le bus pour retrouver ma copine Delphine au Nicaragua et laisser Chrissy en garde-malade...

Finalement on a peine eu le temps de visiter Léon et d'arriver à la plage de Penitas que nous avons vu Bip Bip débarquer avec Chrissy après une semaine d'hospitalisation GRATUITE!!!!!!!!

Nous avions donc 3 semaines à passer au Nicaragua avec un planning au jour le jour que biensûr nous avons suivi seulement dans les grandes lignes...

En tout cas,on a fait une grande boucle et il me semble qu'on a bien couvert le Nicaragua excepté la côte caraïbe... Je pense que çà restera un des pays que nous préférerons de l'Amérique Centrale. On a adoré ce pays aux 1001 volcans avec tous ses lacs, cascades et villes coloniales.

Chris a pu surfer sans s'enfoncer la tête dans le sable... Youpi!

Il ne restera pas inoubliable uniquement pour sa beauté mais aussi pour 1 téléphone et 1 appareil photo cassés, un autre qui a décidé de ne plus être résistant à l'eau ainsi que 2 paires de chaussures et mon livre électronique volés dans Bip Bip alors que nous dormions dedans...

Malgré un nouveau problème mécanique chaque semaine, quand Bip Bip fonctionne, il fonctionne très bien...

BIP BIP HOURA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok well Bippers underwent a quadruple wire bypass and is now roll along.  I was able to hook up with the girls while they were enjoying yet another sundowner on  the beach toasting to freedom.  Whaaat?

We hot-footed it about the country (before another maintenance 'issue' could arise) skipping only the Caribbean (too far for my poor cripple recovering from surgery).  Turns out we liked, nay, PREFERRED Nicaragua to the other CA countries based on scenery and price - oh and the abundance of volcanos which makes it doubly cool.

Oh and to make the highlight real I got to finally surf, for real.  And not surf on my face.  Progress is being made.

Other interesting Nica factoids for Bip Bip Americas:

·          Items busted include – computer keyboard, 2 cameras, 1 cell phone but NOT my face in the surf ahahahahaha !  still, what the hell these breakages??

·          Items stolen include – one pair $2 flip flops, my brand new Columbia sandals (very expensive and NEW thanks to Delphine delivery service) and Fanny’s prized KOBO e-reader. bummer

Seems to be a bad month, irony being that it has been - on expenses - the cheapest country  to date on a per day basis. Weird.
